Depression, Anxiety, Stress relief in today's times is the most sought after goal. Mantras or Chants are effective solutions. Please read till the end. In this article, I have discussed common issues related to mantras through an interesting fable.

The Unexpected Visitor 🔱

On a bright sunny day, draped in an orange coloured gown, the Rational Yogi was taking a stroll in the Park. He heard someone yelling and shouting from a nearby house. At first he hesitated to intervene, but the volume kept on increasing. Curiosity took better of him and he knocked the door.

The yelling stopped. After a couple of minutes, a young man opened the door, “YES?”, he asked.

“Well, I am a monk. People call me the Rational Yogi. Thought, I could be of help. Some soul has a real bad mood in this house.” The Yogi gave a beaming smile to the young man.

The young man appeared to be completely taken away by that smile. “That soul is me. Come in please,” he said.

To hell with everyone, I am not stressed or depressed or whatever…………it’s my mood 🔱

The Young man asked Yogi, “Not sure whether we ever met before?”

The Yogi replied, “No. But we are fellow human beings. Whenever I see someone in distress, I take it as my duty to help in whatever manner I can.”

As the conversation progressed, the young man stated that his name is Akshay and he lives alone in the house. He is a successful entrepreneur having all possible luxuries in life. Of late he was running into lots of family issues and complex challenges at the workplace. Akshay stated that whenever he gets stressed beyond a point, he shouts and yells.

“You know,” the Rational Yogi said. “This could be a sign of stress, anxiety, depression and all the things associated with them?”

“Nop. Not possible,” said Akshay, “I am not depressed. It’s the mood. Sometimes it swings too much,” said Akshay.

“It’s okay,” said the Yogi, “ depression and anxiety is in the core of mood swings. Do you want to get rid of your mood swings problem?”

I am not able to get out of my damn mood….🔱

“Ya! Of Course, said Akshay, “If there’s a magic button to cure my mood swings, I would waste no time to press it. I have tried several methods for depression, anxiety, stress relief but all in vain. My mood swings have affected my family life. My children doesn’t like to interact much with me. My wife has separated. My workplace has become a torture. I start my day yelling and shouting and finish in the same way. I am so exhausted when I reach home. I think I am the only one without luck in this entire humanity and that’s so bad.”

Akshay sat on a sofa and started crying in despair. The Rational Yogi walked up to him and said, “Don’t worry. Depression, anxiety, stress relief solutions are simple and effective. Peace and Happiness is inside you. You just need to allow them to surface.”

“And how am I supposed to do that?”Akshay was curious.

The Yogi replied, “Mantras are powerful stress management remedies. Chanting or listening to mantras unlocks the peace within."

Sorry, Mantra’s aren’t for me! I am an atheist and I am not religious 🔱

Akshay asked, “Can depression, anxiety, stress relief be achieved through mantras? I seriously doubt. I am an atheist you know. As a natural corollary, I don’t believe in mantras either,” Akshay stared at the Yogi.

The Yogi laughed, “Is there a pre-condition that you should be a believer in God to listen to the mantras? No, dear friend. Mantras are pure sounds that causes us to vibrate on a natural frequency. Stress disturbs our natural vibrations and mis-align our neuron pathways. Due to that we become more agitated and stressed. As the agitation and anger increases, the neurons gets further strained. This negative vicious cycle goes on and on. Even to an extent, that it drives some people to commit suicide. That is why the ancient Rishis extensively worked on mantras and mental health. Don’t you agree that our modern living have given us severe mental health conditions?

I am so complex that I don’t think Mantras would work on me 🔱

“I absolutely, agree Mr. Yogi,” Akshay said. “Everyone I meet now-a-days has some kind of mental health issue. They are all trying methods for depression, anxiety, stress relief. But, I think, mantras are only for yogis like you. Not for the common people."

Rational Yogi said to Akshay. “It’s unfortunate that there is so much misunderstanding about mantras. Mantras are for every body. The Sages created mantras for specific life purposes. For example, listening to the Saraswati Mantra improves concentration and focus. In earlier Vedic society, chanting mantras was a way of living. All life problems need us to make decisions. When we decide with a calm mind, we would likely make the best decision. Isn’t it?”

I don’t think my busy life would permit me to chant complex mantras 🔱

“Hmm!,” sighed Akshay, “Your logic make sense. But, I don’t have time to chant these mantras. Life is such a hellish busy for me. No time to die. I need some quick method for depression, anxiety, stress relief.”

Akshay stood up with a jerk and started pacing restlessly. The Yogi looked at him as a mother looks at a restless child. By that look, Akshay’s tense face started to relax. The Yogi said, “Dear Akshay, you don’t even need to chant the mantras for depression, anxiety, stress relief? Even by listening to them you can calm the mind and restore it to natural vibrations.”

Akshay gave a surprised look. The Yogi continued, “Unbelievable! Isn’t it? But, that’s the fact. Play the mantras in the background while you continue to do your routine activities. There are no restrictions. You can listen to them while eating, bathing, driving, at office, in flights. I mean anywhere, anytime. The whole idea is that these sounds should enter your neuron system. You are so successful in the material World. Would you not like to have happiness and bliss?”

There was a long silence. Akshay was looking outside the window into the garden thinking deeply. The Yogi walked upto him. As he put his hand on his shoulder, Akshay turned. Tears were rolling from his eyes. Like a small child, he hugged the Rational Yogi and started crying hard. “I need to get out of my mess. Enough of self-defeating justifications. I will start listening to the chants. Please guide me.”

Every Religion has chants. Listen to any of them 🔱

The Yogi held his hand and walked him to the sofa. He said, “Every religion in the World has used chants for depression, anxiety, stress relief. Each religion has unique chants that re-configures our vibrations to the natural state. If you are an atheist, you are in a sweet spot. Chants from Buddhism, Hinduism, Islamic faiths, Christianity etc. are all for you. Just experiment and find what works for you the best.

For Hindu Vedic chants, there are several mantras on the RationalAstro YouTube channel. As you carry on with your life, play them in the background. They are all free and powerful medicine for depression, anxiety, stress relief.”

But, someone told me, “We shouldn’t chant the mantras wrong, or else…..” 🔱

The Rational Yogi interrupted. “Akshay, these spiritual sounds are sattvic. Chanting or listening to them have no side effects. These sounds takes care of our soul in the same way a mother takes care of her child. Will the mother ever put conditions on the Child before taking care of her?”

Akshay looked convinced. He went into the balcony and returned with a red rose in his hand. He offered it to Yogi, “This was the greatest conversation of my life. I am already feeling much relaxed. Thank You, dear Yogi. I am eager to listen to the mantras.”

The Yogi hugged Akshay, “Our meeting ends here dear friend. My apologies again to have gate crashed into your home. I am leaving you with the powerful OM Chanting. Play that in the background and feel the bliss.”

OM- The Primordial Sound of Universe 🔱

As the Yogi walked away, Akshay kept looking at him till he faded from sight. The meeting was short but life changing. Akshay knew the way out of his self-created mess. He smiled and walked towards his home theater and switched on the OM Chanting. He eased out on the sofa and kept thinking about his meeting with the Rational Yogi. As the sound of OM spread in the house, Akshay never realised when he fell asleep. After several years, he experienced such deep relaxed sleep.
