Eating and Sleeping Better: Bhagavad Gita way to be a Yogi
Only a Yogi can handle the kroora and saumya planetary energies with equal ease. Unleash the Yogi inside by eating and sleeping better.
We all must have heard this term quite often- Eating and Sleeping better. It has almost become a cliché. Besides meditation, this is considered to be a powerful immunity booster. Immunity is an important consideration for the humanity. The Covid-19 experience has taught all the importance of having immunity. Such a pandemic is not likely in the near future. But immunity would be the only shield that would protect us against possible virus attacks in the future.
Sleep & Eating disorders– A serious health hazard 🧿
Due to demands of daily existence, our eating and sleeping patterns are disturbed. Many studies have shown sleep deprivation as a major cause of serious health issues . Further, eating and sleeping more than required is also a serious problem. It decreases the capacity of the body to handle depression, anxiety and stress.
Less or more, both extremes are dangerous for our health. Eating and Sleeping better can be achieved only through a moderate middle path. It is now established that eating disorders is associated with anxiety and stress. Moreover, the society now accepts that a mind full of anxiety and stress would not allow us to sleep. Depression, anxiety and stress has led to serious problems of insomnia. It has also led to obesity among a large segment of population due to eating disorders.
The intrusion of the digital demons into our lives has escalated these problems. The devices has turned us into digital zombies. The time that we spent on social media, mobile phones and electronic devices is high. There is no time to engage with family and real life social connections. There was a time when entire family used to eat together. But now they eat along with TV and other devices. While eating this way, we cannot read the body signal that we are full. This unconscious overeating leads to serious disorders connected with obesity.
Similar thing happens with sleep. When we get lost in the world of social media, we miss the signals that the body is giving us for sleeping. We keep awake till the point we can resist. Disturbances in sleep patterns causes loss of immunity and resultant illness.
Adverse planetary energies never affects a Yogi 🧿
A Yogi remains unfazed by whatever positive and negative goes around. Yogi takes everything with equanimity - sama bhaav. Whatever planets have to offer, Yogi has the capability to accept that with ease.
We are all born as a Yogi. Blissful, happy existence with no stress, anxiety whatsoever. But as we grow up we start suppressing our Yogi. Layers of ambition, jealousy, competition with others, negativity, stress, anxiety, depression takes over. As a result, we are unable to handle kroora (adverse) energies from the planets. The planets want us to strive hard to remove the layers surrounding our Yogi. The sooner we learn to do it, the better it is for our existence in this body. Eating and sleeping better is the first step towards uncovering our inner Yogi.
Eating and Sleeping Better – The Bhagavad Gita prescription 🧿
The Bhagavad Gita prescribes moderation in eating and sleeping. In Chapter-6, Dhyana-Yoga, Sloka 16, the Lord says:
नात्यश्र्नतस्तु योगोsस्ति न चैकान्तमनश्नत: ।
न चातिस्वप्नशीलस्य जाग्रतो नैव चार्जुन ।।
Natyashrantastu Yogoasti Na Chaikantmanashnataha
Na Chatiswapnasheelasya Jagrato Naiv Charjun
There is no possibility of one's becoming a yogi, O Arjuna, if one eats too much or eats too little. One cannot become a Yogi if one sleeps too much or does not sleep enough.
This sloka gives a clear sign that we need to have moderate sleep and diet intake in our everyday life to become a Yogi.
Eating and Sleeping Better through power of mantras 🧿
Let’s begin this journey to free the Yogi inside us. In a few months from now, let us be forever free from sleeping pills and stress eating. Irrespective of planetary combinations in our horoscope, we can have benefits from the mantras.
There are no complications involved in chanting or listening to vedic mantras. Please do read-
Play the mantra in the background. Keep the face relaxed and eyes closed. You may lie down or sit but the position should be comfortable. Try to recall what you have eaten in the last twenty four hours. Also try to recall any sleep naps or lethargy moments in the past twenty four hours. All this while you are aware that the chant is surrounding you from all sides. That’s it. If you are consistent with this for a few days, you will not know when you won over your sleep and eating disorders. You may not be able to explain this experience but that doesn’t matter. If you become a Yogi, nothing else matters.
