Need a shubh muhurat? Let's find it ourselves
An ausipicious day and time can be known without expert knowledge
An esteemed reader asked-
"What is a reasonable amount that I should pay for calculating muhurtham for satyanarayan katha? I don’t know how to find shubh muhurat but does it need to be so expensive to find it out? What is shubh muhurat? Can’t we find it ourselves? Please tell us how to check shubh muhurat ourselves."
Shubh muhurat is an asuspicious day or precisely an auspicous time to start an important activity. People generally prefer to find an auspicious day to start business, to buy car, for property registration, for car delivery, to buy gold, for puja, for baby birth etc. It is a common practice specially in India to calculate shubh muhurat for engagement, marriage ceremony, business opening, grih pravesh (entering a new house), child birth, mundan, pooja, buying electronics etc. So much so that some religious people calculate shubh muhurat for death as well.
Let us leave aside the technicals about Muhurta. We can find a good muhurta ourselves for any auspicious activity by a simple thumb rule without paying for it.
The Thumb Rule is this:
Check the time of sunrise on a day. Calculate approximately six hours from the sunrise time. This is approximately the midday time. Now we subtract 20 mins to mid day time and add 20 mins to mid day time. This 40 mins zone is the Abhijit Muhurat and any auspicious activity can be performed within this zone.
Precisely speaking, Abhijit Muhurat is the 8th period when the time between sunrise and sunset is divided in 15 periods. We get the Abhijit Muhurat Zone by subtracting 24 mins from Midday time and adding 24 mins to midday time.
The logic of six hours to find mid day time from the sunrise time is very simple. At the time of sunrise, the Sun and the Ascendant (Lagna) are together. The lagna is in a rasi for approximately two hours. After about six hours, the Sun would be in the 10th house from Lagna. The tenth house is the Karma Sthana and the planet Sun in Vedic Astrology considered a source of all energy is in the 10th house which is considered very auspicious.
The muhurta calculator as mentioned above through a rule of thumb would obviously not be as pristine as the one that is properly calculated through the Panchanga and other parameters. However, it would suffice for most of the day to day life situations that do not involve any major religious activity.
In conclusion to the question asked above, finding muhurat is not expensive for most of the things. It can be calculated free of cost as mentioned above as an astro self-service. Even though it won’t be that precise, it is sufficient for most of the mundane life activities. 🌺
